From Short Point at Dawn

Merimbula, on the Sapphire Coast of NSW, is one of the most popular holiday destinations for a very good reason and it’s one of our favourite places to take photos. From Short Point, overlooking Back Lake and Tura Beach to Top Lake and the Boardwalk; the ever popular Bar Beach and Mitchies Jetty; Merimbula is full of lovely spots to spend the day soaking up some sun, relaxing or trying something new.

If you are looking for a holiday getaway that has a good mix of getting back to nature as well as great restaurants, things to do and lovely places to stay, then Merimbula is worth a visit. As a photographer, it’s a great place to base yourself as you explore some of the Sapphire Coasts picturesque locations.

For sunrises we recommend Short Point, especially in summer. Main Beach is great in winter. Mitchies Jetty is also divine at dawn. For the adventurous, Middle Beach can be spectacular at dawn, but take a torch to get down the stairs and try to get there the day before so you can plan your shot in advance.

Top Lake

Top Lake, from the car park at the boat ramp

The best vantages for sunsets are around Top Lake, notably from the Boardwalk at the Boat Hire end and from boat ramp car park near the bridge. We have also gotten some lovely afternoon shots from Short Point, looking back over Back Lake.

No matter how much time you have, there is always something new to come back to. We are still finding new places and even going back to old ones from time to time as our skills improve. So how about you? Where are your favourite places to take photos?

  1. I’m happy I found your blog as I want to visit Australia some day. Going through your posts gives me ideas on the places I might want to visit while I’m there. It’ll also make it easier to decide where to stay at as a central location so I don’t have to travel so far each day to get the most out of my trip.

    Great photos! 🙂

    • Thanks.

We love the mountains too. We are lucky enough to live near Kosciusko National Park so we’ll be heading up there this summer to practice and put some of the things we’ve learnt into action. Lakes are wonderful too aren’t they.
